The Best Skiing in Europe
European Vacations > Skiing in Europe
Winter vacations don't come any better than skiing in Europe for variety of choice, challenging runs and some of the most spectacular resorts.
Not surprisingly, Switzerland is a popular choice with skiers, not only for the stunning views of the snow covered Alps, but also for the challenges presented to both beginners and skiers at a more advanced level.
One of Switzerlands' more fashionable resorts is Verbier, where you will find some of the most extreme skiing in Europe, and some great nightlife.
France has the magnificent Val Thorens, with three ski areas and the highest ski resort in Europe. All along the border there is also the opportunity for first class skiing in Spain with the Pyrenees.
Spain also has the Sierra Nevada in the south, where you can enjoy some fabulous skiing and it is even possible to visit the beach on the same day.
If you're looking for guaranteed snow your best bet is the Paradiski area in the French Alps, which is an amalgamation of the areas of Les Arcs and La Plagne, and it's open until late April. The facilities are mind boggling.
Backpackers just love it!
One of the main advantages of Europe is that many countries are landlocked, which makes it easy to move from one place to another. Given the vast number of excellent hostels throughout Europe, this fact has not been overlooked with backpackers who take full advantage.
Tucked in between Spain and France is Andorra, perhaps lesser known for skiing, but it is the perfect place for beginners, and ideal for families.
Other countries that don't immediately spring to mind but have excellent skiing, are Italy, with The Dolomites region, and Scotland, with five good resorts and where there are sometimes snowfalls right up until Easter.
Scotland's highest skiing is the Nevis range, where you will find testing slopes, modern facilities and good hospitality. Skiing here is quite cheap.
A great place for beginners is Sweden, especially the Are Resort, where there are excellent facilities, including excellent tuition, 52 beginner runs, four separate ski areas, a snowboard area, 44 lifts and 7 chairlifts.
